Book Recommendations—Romantic Suspense/Thriller Edition
I’m looking for a romance genre book that is heavily weighted towards suspense/thriller. This is for a book talk video series I participate in at my library. I really enjoy a good domestic thriller, but hardly ever read books in the romance genre. Yes, I know there are lots of lists out there, but I’m looking for personal recommendations! Bonus points if it’s not by a super well known author, and I’d prefer a contemporary setting. All levels of steaminess are fine! Any ideas? Thanks in advance, fellow readers!
Seeking Book Recommendations
I'm looking for some book recommendations. I tend to enjoy fiction with rich character development and emotional depth (aka I end up reading a lot of sad books, though that's not a requirement). [more inside]
Looking for a catalog of book spines
I'm looking for pictures of the spines of every book ever published, including every changed version of the art.
It's a small ask I know, but if someone knows of a good place to start that would be very helpful. [more inside]
Best books about the Franklin expedition?
I just finished watching The Terror and now I'm curious to read more about the Franklin expedition. According to Google, there are three million books on the subject, so I was wondering which ones are the best for a general reader. Any recommendations?
- readable prose is important
- in-depth descriptions of each part of the ship, not as important
The View from Tuesday
What are your favorite books like Tuesday Mooney Talks to Ghosts, but in the sense of "Characters who are all whacky and interesting to hang out with." Like E.L. Konigsburg books but for adults. Tuesday Mooney has characters with funky interests and a lot of different ages, which is what I’m looking for. I think I’m mostly looking for realistic fiction, mystery fiction or I suppose romance fiction for adults but really I want characters who are funky and interesting.

Good SQL Books for Mid-Career Developers
I'm leading a small team of very smart/competent software developers. We're taking on some work that will have us interacting with a complex SQL (MS SQL / Transact SQL) database. We are not historically database people. I'd like to find a book the team can work through together for professional development, so we all skill up a bit and build shared vocabulary/language/concepts for these tasks. Any recommendations? Futuristic Technologically Advanced Fiction Book Recommendation
My 17-year old son, who doesn't/hasn't read for pleasure, expressed some interest in giving it a try. He said he's most interested in futuristic technologically advanced society type fiction. I'm going to the book store tomorrow and was thinking I'd like to try to get something for him. Any suggestions? I think it needs to really grab his attention from the beginning and it'd be best if it were an easy read.
Whatcha got?
Do authors get paid for each time an ebook is borrowed from the library?
Does checking out an ebook or digital audiobook from a public library in the US lead to the author getting any royalties (or benefit them in any other direct way)? Does this differ by platform (Hoopla, Overdrive, Axis360)? [more inside]
Resources to understand the economy without abstractions/money
I am interested in understanding the economy as it pertains to the wellbeing of people, rather than the value of some subset of publicly traded companies. Particularly, I'm interested in answering questions about what the material and labour requirements are to sustain a society that can provide adequate food, water, shelter, healthcare, transportation, etc for all of its members. Good things happening to nice people
BookFilter: Serious, literary fiction primarily consisting of happy things, likable characters, people doing their best and things working out for them. I have the perfect example in mind but I don't want to spoil that book for you -- suffice it to say, I know it can be done. Not really looking for YA or genre fiction (unless it's spectacular). Thanks for any suggestions!

Enjoyable, recent-ish literary criticism
My mother, in her seventies, recently mentioned that she regrets not doing a degree in English - she has a degree in a different subject. She's considering doing some OU or other literature-related courses. I'd like to find a recent-ish (say last ten years) work of lit crit that she might enjoy to build on her interest in the area. When I turn 50 I want to grow up to be....
Looking for great reads about people I can look up to as I grow older. Maybe someone cool or creative or courageous or kind. Maybe someone bigger than life. Maybe a wise sage, or a hopeless romantic. Looking for character studies of people, real or imaginary, who have a few qualities that are both inspirational and aspirational.
Read aloud book suggestions for 4 and 5 year old boys?
Well. Our libraries have all closed now. We have been reading picture books but I think now its time we try to move to chapter books for me to read aloud. I would prefer enough pictures to keep the boys interested, like one per page, or one per every other page? We don't have an e-reader for kids. [more inside]
Textbook recommendations on specific language of healthy relationships?
Recently realized how growing up in a home whose only two relationships skills were "give in" and "walk out of the room" left a huge deficit of those "middle skills" that involve clearly, respectfully, *productively* asking/negotiating for what one needs; addressing hurtful behavior; productively digging into deeper motives/wants needs. The books I've read to date talk about these skills, but give zero examples of the actual LANGUAGE to use. It's like being given a blueprint without the actual tools needed. Looking for recommendations on books or textbooks that specifically addresses how to say things. Social work/psychology textbooks are fine.

Ornately illustrated children’s books
I am looking for a collection of stories or a chapter book with ornate, gorgeous illustrations for every page. I’d like to get something like that for my kid this year. [more inside]

Metafilter and the Mysterious Mystery of the SF Mystery Novel
A friend is looking for a book that she heard about and now wants to read, but she can’t remember what it was. She describes it as an upcoming (or maybe recent) science fiction locked room mystery novel that opens with a woman alone on probably a spaceship, with a dead body and some bossy but unhelpful robots and no memories. (If not locked room, at least mystery structure.) [more inside]
Are color images in nice books considered archival? How are they printed
I'm an artist and aware that for digital art prints, giclee printing is recommended as being most archival. This involves an inkjet printer and pigment inks rather than dyes. I'm wondering how this relates to the printing process for nice books. Do they use dyes or pigments, or is there some completely different process I don't understand? If not giclee, how archival is color generally considered? [more inside]

One Man's Feat: How to Build a Complete E.B. White Collection

Novels set after Christmas/New Year's
I just read An Unnecessary Woman, which starts right after New Year's. It made me realize how much I love books set either after New Year's or in the "dead week" between Christmas and New Year's. The feeling of anticipation and quietness after holiday bustle. Can you recommend other novels with that setting and atmosphere?

folk horror recs
hey all, looking for horror recommendations with these criteria:
1. Horror
2. Largeish group of humans isolated from others
3. This group of humans is culty or there is an actual monster about - bonus if both?
Some examples of this: The Village (2004) (pre-twist), The Wicker Man, Alma Katsu's The Hunger, Midsommar, The Other Lamb. This has a lot of overlap with folk horror, but I seem to have exhausted all of the folk horror rec lists I can find around the web. Thanks!

女人的奶头(不遮挡) Best platform for online reading with kids?
My non-profit runs a reading program where kids ages 6-10 meet with adult volunteer "reading buddies" once a month to chat, do arts & crafts, and read books. In Before times, we gathered in person and had a cart of children's books that kids could pick from to read with their buddies. In Pandemic times I'm looking for an online platform that would allow the kids and adults to have access to a collection of eBooks while meeting remotely over a platform like Zoom, the idea being that we can screenshare over Zoom so that the kids and adults can all see the book. Japanese novel quote?
I remember reading a contemporary Japanese novel, in the same vein as Oe or Murikami, about a single man living in an apartment complex (?) and he kinda had a fling with a lady. At one point he bonds with a gay man (?) trans woman (?) and muses to himself: “someone so sensitive to the warp in themselves must surely be so sympathetic so my own weirdness” Or something like that. I definitely remember “warp” being part of the line. What’s the quote, and what’s the book?

Request: Memoir About Moving to a New City
I'm hoping to find some great memoirs or essay collections to read, and I am looking for something rather specific -- a person (ideally a "regular" person -- not a celebrity or well-known writer/artist) moves to a new, unfamiliar city, and writes about their experiences and observations living in that city. Ideally, the tone would be primarily lighthearted/humorous, but with poignant, bittersweet moments, and emotional depth. Thank you for any recommendations!
Books about the Black Panthers
After learning about the history of the free breakfast program, and looking forward to Judas the Black Messiah, I'd like to learn more about the history of the Black Panthers. Searching for good books about this is somewhat complicated by items and information about Black Panther the Marvel character - which is great, but not what I am looking for. What are great books about the history of the Black Panther movement in the US? [more inside]
